I have had my 12' model in winds in excess of 45MPH and it fared extremely well. This is an upgrade to a larger model for me- I normally set two tarps in addidtion to my tent, one as a kitchen and the other as a viewspace- this will take over kitchen duty.

(More customer reviews)Recently took this tent on a 30 mile backpack from Tuolumne Meadows to Yosemite Valley. It is easy to put up and well built. It's greatest advantage is it's lightweight at 2.2 pounds. Also like the clip design for attaching the fly to the tent and groundcloth. Yes it is expensive but where pounds count it comes through with flying colors. Only drawback is the internal stash hammock does not come with it and is a special order. Planning to take it on the John Muir Trail next month.

(More customer reviews)My wife and I purchased our present UGA Tent from Kroger way back in 01/06/07 and it's been through 2 severe storms.Actually, two of the corner posts were broken but I managed to repair them and I invented a PVC cross fixture to add extra strength.I've also added 8 ea (RED, of course) Bungee cords and that has prevented any further damage; I'm just experiencing the fade/rot problem these days.I use it for our beautiful S/Husky Dog plus for a storage unit for my John Deere Gator or my little Ford Ranger Truck.I just hope the one I receive this time will last as long as the first one.At least now, I know what I need to do when assembling it.Many thanks and God Bless from Great-Grandpa Pennington in middle, Ga.

(More customer reviews)These are very heavy duty construction, more than I expected.A bit difficult to get into hard ground (you might try a soak-and-dry cycle or two before augering them in).

Good stuff.Good for semi-permanent anchoring.

One thing though--you will need some s-hooks (hardware store) to make it easy to attach pre-tied cord.The eyes on the end of this unit are welded shut, and they are so heavy that you couldn't bend them anyway to slip a rope into the eye.

I would have rated it 4.5 stars if it wasn't for the seams that are not taped or factory sealed.For a tent in this price range I would have expected a tent ready to use out of the box.
I use it mostly in sea kayak trips, along with a Golite Hex 3.

I agree with the previous reviewer, this really is a great tent.You can tell that a lot of quality and detail are built into this tent.We had two nights of pretty steady rain, and not a single drop got inside the tent.This thing is huge, and when we put the room divider in place it seemed even larger.Very cool.One thing that we really liked - the stuff bag was huge! and so easy to put the tent back into.Dont know why but thats always been a pet peeve of mine.I am gonna buy the floor saver, I think it will help protect the tent floor a little more.

I dont ordinarily write reviews on the net, but I was moved to write about this.It was a real attention getter in the camp area we were in.I could have sold 5 of them, especially to the people whos tents leaked.Few things I buy nowadays impress me like this tent did.

Selecting a Tent
Fortunately, there are all kinds of tents for weekend car campers, Everest expeditions, and everything in-between. Here are a few things to keep in mind:
Expect the Worst
In general, it's wise to choose a tent that's designed to withstand the worst possible conditions you think you'll face. For instance, if you're a summer car camper in a region where weather is predictable, an inexpensive family or all purpose tent will likely do the trick--especially if a vehicle is nearby and you can make a mad dash for safety when bad weather swoops in! If you're a backpacker, alpine climber or bike explorer, or if you like to car camp in all seasons, you'll want to take something designed to handle more adversity.
Three- and Four-Season Tents
For summer, early fall and late spring outings, choose a three-season tent. At minimum, a quality three season tent will have lightweight aluminum poles, a reinforced floor, durable stitching, and a quality rain-fly. Some three-season tents offer more open-air netting and are more specifically designed for summer backpacking and other activities. Many premium tents will feature pre-sealed, taped seams and a silicone-impregnated rain-fly for enhanced waterproofness.
For winter camping or alpine travel, go with a four season model. Because they typically feature more durable fabric coatings, as well as more poles, four-season tents are designed to handle heavy snowfall and high winds without collapsing. Of course, four-season tents exact a weight penalty of about 10 to 20 percent in trade for their strength and durability. They also tend to be more expensive.
Domes and Tunnels
Tents are broadly categorized into two types, freestanding, which can stand up on their own, and those that must be staked down in order to stand upright. Freestanding tents often incorporate a dome-shaped design, and most four-season tents are constructed this way because a dome leaves no flat spots on the outer surface where snow can collect. Domes are also inherently stronger than any other design. Meanwhile, many three-season models employ a modified dome configuration called a tunnel. These are still freestanding, but they require fewer poles than a dome, use less fabric, and typically have a rectangular floor-plan that offers less storage space than a dome configuration. Many one and two-person tents are not freestanding, but they make up for it by being more lightweight. Because they use fewer poles, they can also be quicker to set up than a dome.
Size Matters
Ask yourself how many people you'd like to fit in your fabric hotel now and in the future. For
soloists and minimalists, check out one-person tents. If you're a mega-minimalist, or if you have your eye on doing some big wall climbs, a waterproof-breathable bivy sack is the ticket. Some bivy sacks feature poles and stake points to give you a little more breathing room. Also, if you don't need bug protection and you want to save weight, check out open-air shelters.
Families who plan on car camping in good weather can choose from a wide range of jumbo-sized tents that will accommodate all your little ones with room to spare. A wide range of capacities is also available for three- and four-season backpacking and expedition tents. Remember, though, the bigger the tent you buy, the heavier it will be, although it's easy to break up the tent components among several people in your group. It's also helpful to compare the volume and floor-space measurements of models you're considering.

Kamp-Rite Tent Cot Double Tent Cot (Green) Review

(More customer reviews)For those whom are considering buying this product-you don't need another review that praises the ingenuity of the Tent Cot so I'll just give you the gripes.

1. Should have included a rainfly
For heaven's sake I could see sunlight through the sewn seams of the roof of the tent which were not taped.A rain fly should not be considered an accessory!!!!!!!!!Yes, I ordered one today.

2.The grommets that secure the poles (you insert the poles in these gromments at either end of the tent roof) for the roof were offset from the center of the strap making it difficult to insert the end of the poles.Quality control problem?

3. The roof would have been better (in my opinion) as a noseeem roof WITH A RAINFLY INCLUDED!!!!!!!!!

4. The instructions are terrible. The setup is simple if you have done it once or twice or have seen it done. Try to figure out the simple setup from the enclosed crude instructions and you will wonder how they can engineer such a great product and stop the process when they got to the instructions-typical old school engineers.

5. No UV protection for the fabric expecially for the rainfly (poor show). $13.00 for a bottle of 333 UV did the trick.

6. At 40+ pounds I would still be tempted to backpack this in for short trails (no ground sheet, mat, stakes, fly weight) but it is so wide. If they had a couple/decouple in the main tubes so you could fold it in half-that would be the ticket!!!!!!!

again a great product but it could be so much more with these little extras.

Mt. Barren Family Tent Review

(More customer reviews)After one summer of use, I am able to say I would rate this tent like I did on my first impression. It held up well during five camping trips. One included 50 mph winds and two hours of rain with eight people inside! The only complaint I have is the difficulty getting a large enough and level enough area for this monster tent.
All of the screens and zippers held up and the poles are all straight. The tent holds heat well at night. We slept in 45-50°F with plain sleeping bags: nothing extreme. We had a queen-sized air mattress, a double mattress, two bunk-style cots, a large 32" dog crate and a 3x3 folding table in the tent. We also had our clothes bags and personal items in the tent. There is so much room! Great for families.
So I would recommend this tent for people looking for maximum room and plenty of storage area. I would not recommend this tent for people with limited camping site space or are camping without help to set it up. It is BIG!
Below is my original first impression.

Just to clarify-I have only set this tent up in the basement so far. My wife and I purchased this tent after weeks and weeks of research. It was one of three other tents to review. The other two tents were a Eureka Copper Canyon and the Gigatent Mt. Kingsman. This reason for our choice was two factors. First was price. Based on features, options and size, this Gigatent Mt. Barren wins hands down. The other factor was versatility. We camp with two young children and two dogs. Quite often we have family members or other children join us. The Mt. Barren allows you to divide the tent into one, two, three or four rooms.
The set-up of this tent was fairly easy. The instructions were a bit vague. My nephew and I set the tent up in the basement in about 20 minutes and two disassembles. Now that I have done it once (and labeled the poles) it should be fairly easy to have it up in 10 minutes or so.

Overall, I would say I am happy so far. It has tons of space (210 square feet) and lots of windows. I will post new info after we have camped in the tent a few times. For a good look at the tent use this link.

Coleman Insta-Clip 4 Sided Screen House Review

(More customer reviews)I have used 6 of these screenhouses in the past 2 years for some agricultural field experiments.This was not normal use and they received a lot of abuse, but mostly the tents stood up to the challenge.I put them up in mid-June and they were up through late August.They lasted those few months, even in some very severe winds.Instead of using the wimpy metal stakes included with the package, I pounded rebars into the ground (at the angle of the hollow support poles) and pushed the poles onto the rebars.This really stabilized the tents.

The other reviewer here mentioned that the support poles are made of a soft steel and don't hold up very well.This is very true.The poles are in pieces and fit together to form 4 long support pieces that clip into an "x" at the top of the tent.However, many of the pieces crimped and bent at the bend in the upper corners of the tent.This made some of the tents kind of wonky-looking and unstable.It also weakened the fabric at these points, since the tab/clip part was stressed due to the instability of the supports.The bent pieces also made it nearly impossible to disconnect the support pieces.This was not a problem for me since I left the tents up permanently, but would be aggravating for a family or individuals trying to put up/take down the screenhouse several times.

The picture and description is not entirely clear about the bottom of the screenhouse.Please note that there is no "bottom" fabric inside; it even appears this way on the photo on the package.Instead, there are blue tarp-type flaps attached to the bottom of each side.This was great for me, since I was in a cornfield and could pile dirt on the flaps to prevent insects and rodents from getting in.If you will have this up for any length of time, you may want to put some heavy objects on the flaps.

The setup is very easy once you get the hang of it.I strongly recommend setting the screenhouse up with 2 adults, particularly if it's windy.The support pole clips are sometimes difficult to snap into the "x" on the tent top, but eventually they go in.Even though the sides are mesh, they really do keep the bugs out (I was doing research on bugs, so I know!) and the mesh never ripped even with several people going in/out daily.The zippers never failed to work, even when they were dirty.

Each tent also comes in a sturdy blue fabric tote.The stakes (metal and plastic) come in bags to keep them together.I didn't have too much difficulty stuffing everything back in the tote.

I am giving this four stars for 2 reasons:
1) The screenhouses did last a long time, even in harsh weather with a lot of dust and abuse.
2) The customer service people at Coleman were very nice and shipped me replacement support poles free of charge when they bent.

If you have problems with the supports, I recommend calling the company directly (there is a slip inside the package with their number and warranty info) to ask about replacements.I had no problem with their customer service.

(More customer reviews)We have used these tent stakes for years, and we have to keep buying them because the green plastic heads break off.Maybe it is design feature to assure repeat customers.In our experience, we don't break as many by hitting them with a stake hammer going into the ground - ours always break when trying to remove the stake with a stake puller, especially in hard soil.

BUT!I think I have found a way to avoid (or at least minimize) removal breakage.Before our last camping trip, I tied a cord to the nail portion, and threaded the loose ends through the hole in the green head.I used a miller's or constrictor knot (or some adaptation of it), then just tied the loose ends together into a loop above the plastic head.When stake pulling time came, we slipped the puller (or the handle of the mallet) into the cord loop (rather than into the plastic head), and all the stakes came up VERY easily, without damaging a single stake head.This concept works because now the pressure of the pull is absorbed by the metal nail, and not by the brittle plastic, and the pull is now directed at the shaft of the nail (at least that's my theory; I don't pretend to understand physics). And it worked!! The loop was not in the way during the hammering phase, and provided the easiest removal that we have ever experienced.This method was tested in the hard, rocky soil of the Texas Hill Country - a tent stake's nemesis, I assure you.

Wikipedia has excellent examples of the aforementioned knots.

So with a little after-market retrofitting (I can attach the loops while my DH drives to the campground), these inexpensive, dependable stakes are at last a bit more durable.

(More customer reviews)This would be my third tent I bought and by far the best. Its insanely easy to set up. The structure stakes down really well and will NEVER move in any wind. Having 2 doors is wonderful also so you don't have to step over anyone. I'm 6'3" and theres plenty of room here for me and another person. The rainfly covers the tent wonderfully and also gives you two small vestibules to set your gear under. Quality wise the fabric is really strong especiallyaround the straps that get staked down. Comes with a quality stuff sack for everything too.Rolls up super easy with very little effort getting everything into the bag.The only drawback I guess would be the stakes that are provided. Just plain cheap ones. I recommend getting a set of nice aluminum ones for $10. Also get a foot print to go with this.(tarp type thing to go under the tent) to save it from any holes.

A GREAT buy. Wow, just a bit of gushing over this product...
I believe The North Face offers a lifetime warranty on the tent also. Excellent.

This tent is perfect for casual, fair weather camping, but it does not appear to be of a heavy enough material to be a winter tent. One man can put up this tent relatively easily...it's much faster with two. Once erected, it has room for 2 queen size or 3 full size air mattresses with room to spare, and being 6'2", it's great no to have to stoop either getting into the tent, or standing up in it. A great deal for the price I paid.

(More customer reviews)The first time setting this up (in our garage), it took my husband and I only 30 minutes to set up the tent, and another 30 minutes to set up the fly.The directions were decent, but they don't tell you that it is color-coded which helps. The direction on the fly is incorrect - you need to place the spine pole of the fly into the web pockets before you drape it over the tent.

Very roomy with plenty of ventilation.We placed ours on a light tarp that was a very close footprint of the tent itself.

It is probably a known item to frequent campers, but having only used the very small tents, it took us a few minutes to figure out what the toggles were for inside and outside the tent (securing the rolled up unzipped divider).Velcro tabs on the fly to hold it on the poles were also designed but not in the directions.

We'll be camping with it this weekend with some rain in the forecast and I hope to have a follow-up review. The zippers seem well-made with velcro fastners to keep the elements out.

I am currently "camping" on a "tent" platform with timber frame posts and beams all around and 3 walls about a third of the way done with natural building techniques. I also have a standard framed roof with a tarp pinned down to it. I am seeking to see if this tent will over winter in a partially built structure in order to observe the natural building process as it is performing. This will allow me to make design changes to the structure without actually having to deconstruct or settle on a less than optimally performing house.
As far as what can be said about the tent, the design is solid and well thought out. The poles are super strong and surprisingly easy to assemble. I am still assessing the whole seperated room thing????? The floor does not go all the way across and it is difficult to tell whether or not this will be the best situation until I try it staked and on the earth next summer. Maybe the footprint is a needed accessory, in which case it should be considered an accessory????????
All in all this was the best tent that I could find at this pricemark.

(More customer reviews)You can get this tent a whole lot cheaper at the Coleman online outlet at their website. That's where they sell the products they don't manufacture anymore but still have in inventory. I got mine for seventy.I just received mine yesterday and I haven't camped in this exact tent yet, but as soon as I do try it out I'll give a field review of it. However I HAVEcamped in one owned by a friend before and it held up to some pretty foul weather with no problems at all. Plus, for the price, I don't know how you can beat it!

The rainfly is great and features two good sized "kickstand" vents in the top rear, great for keeping it cooler when you're stuck in the rain during the hot months. Doesn't turn into a sauna with those vents.

My only real gripe is the "Integrated groundsheet that can be zipped on and off". Mine didn't come with one. There's no zipper anywhere near the floor either, so it doesn't even look like it was meant to have one. Not a big deal, as I always make a custom ground sheet for all my tents anyway. Having the integrated ground sheet would have been nice, but not really a deal maker or breaker in my decision to purchase this tent.

The front vestibule does zip on and off however. You could remove it to lighten your load a little, butI plan on having it attached all the time for the protection, privacy and storage.

The poles are VERY nice. I love aluminum poles as opposed to the fiberglass poles.

There's a pretty fair amount of room on the inside as well. It's a two man, but I consider it a one man with room for some stuff.I can easily sit up and move about. Not claustrophobic at all. With the fly off, there's plenty of mesh for stargazing and catching a breeze. Two decent sized storage pockets on either side are nice, too.

Tent also comes with a handy little repair kit. Nice of them I suppose.

One more gripe that I forgot about: I don't like the pole sleeves on this (or any other) tent. I would much rather just use clips than have to fiddle around with pole sleeves. They just snag and make you mad.

But all in all, and especially for the price I got, I think this tent is a real winner.

(More customer reviews)A tent's "footprint" is a sheet of nylon or plastic that goes underneath your tent. It's tailored to mirror the same shape as the floor of your tent. In olden days, we just called these things a "ground cloth."

Manufacturers make specific footprints for their tents because you want the footprint to be slightly smaller than the exact size of the tent. When you're camping out in the rain, you don't want water running down the side of the tent onto the footprint and then channeling it underneath the tent; you want the water runoff to go directly onto the ground.

This footprint by Kelty is made of the same fabric as that of the floor providing a second layer of fabric for protection of the underside of your tent from stones, twigs, mud, dirt and moisture. It's designed to be a sacrificial element because it is replaceable while your floor is not. This footprint comes packed in a mesh stuff sack.

One compelling reason to use a footprint is that it's much more convenient to lay out the footprint and visualize the ideal placement and orientation of your tent on a campsite. Then, clear the area underneath the footprint of sharp rocks and sticks, lay your tent on the footprint, stake it out with the poles to the attached grommets and follow through with the rest of tent setup.

I was concerned that her weight which is over 200 lbs would be a problem. Man this bed performs. I have never written one of these reviews and to be honest I hesistated after reading negative reviews. What realize now is that disatisfied people are much more likely to write something and the many more satisfied customers have moved on to enjoy their purchase. This bed is worth every penny and performs exactly as described.

(More customer reviews)I bought these because I wanted the reflective line and the Figure 9's looked cool and I thought it would be easy to adjust tent lines. You can adjust tent lines very easily with Figure 9. However the product's strength is also it's weakness. The Figure 9 also grabs on to everything else as well. Fold up your tent after use and you will find that the next time you use it you can count on 4 or 5 minutes of detangling the 9's. Put up your tent near shrubs and you will find the 9's catching on the leaves, stems, pine needles, anything else that happens to get in the way.

Great product except it really hasn't made putting up my tent any easier or faster. The reflective lines are great but only reflect if you are wearing a headlamp. In that case they reflect like neon signs. However the angle of reflection is so small that when I wore the headlamp and my girlfriend did not, she could not see the lines even though she was standing next to me.

The hardest part of the whole thing was getting the rolled up tent back into the carrying case. :)It was perfect for keeping my 9 month grandson out of the sand and the sun. Very roomy. One suggestion. Getting the sand out of the side pockets wasn't easy and when collapsing the tent the sand would fall inside. I had to take it home, reopen and vacuum it out. The next time I took 6 one gallon zip lock bags and put the sand in them before placing in side pockets. It worked great. Dumped sand out of the bags and kept for the next trip and no sand falling inside the tent when collapsing it.

(More customer reviews)I've used the solo version of this tent for 5 years and over 100 times on bicycle tours. Still going strong. I've used the Spitfire 2 for three years and about a dozen times. The 2 is identical to the 1 in design except it has twice the floor area and entry on two sides. May be a couple of inches higher.

Both of these tents are, for the money, great investments. They are light and durable. Very easy to pitch. I've not had a moments trouble from either with any of the components or the fabric. Water will seep through the floor if you don't use a footprint or pitch it where water accumulates. I suspects this is true of all light tents. You do have to craft your own footprint. I use light tarp material.

The only reason I rated it a 4 star is that I chose to add some additional stake points to stretch the fly taunt. Important if it storms. If you're not using the fly, the tent body is good with just a stake at each end.

Highly recommended.

I set it up at home first to see how difficult it would be - it was really easy - just three poles used and its up! It was very roomy.
Definately a bit more difficult at the beach to do it, but that's factoring the wind and sand. Still quite easy though.
It was very cool inside, however, not when the front is zipped up (which I tried when I needed to feed the baby) --- it got very hot with the front closed up. But it still offered alot of privacy, even with the front part opened up.

It folds up smaller than one of those packageable lounge chairs, very light, and I know its going to be something we use for many years.

The tent is pretty quick and easy to set up but it is diffucult to get the sag out of it between the large pole and the small pole. After I had the rain fly on I was able to pull the large pole forward and have the rain fly keep it in place. This reduced some but not all of the sag. I may have to add a bungee and another stake to solve this issue. It is a good size for one person. A little bigger would be nice but for backpacking sake you want to keep it small and light. I found that this tent rolled up smaller than the factory description. I experienced very light rain during the night in this tent. I had no moisture issues with rain or condensation. Overall I am pretty satisfied.

However, the center pole broke on one of the tents the second night and then the other tent had both its side poles broke a day later. The first tent had more breaks and finally collapsed four days into the trip. The other tent barely stood with more breaks. The collapse was even after reinforcing the initial break. We checked into a nearby hotel the rest of the way. Obviously, I do not recommend this tent.

In cold weather I use a small catalytic propane heater to take off the chill. It stands up to the wind really well. This one hasn't been through rain yet, but I have a Bear Mountain which stays perfectly dry so thinking this will too. I haven't used the separator to make two rooms in the back yet, I like the open space, it's huge.

The main drawback is you have to add in about 8 to 10 inches more of the length in order to fit comfortably. We needed to fit in a 6'8" person and the dimension specs appear to enough with some extra room. The length wise ends slope inwards and then up, so this takes away valuable room. The head and the toes touched each of the tent. The width is good and sufficient. We returned this item, and ended up buying one from REI locally for $90, which is twice the price of this. Summary: if you are 6 feet tall or under, this product would be good for you.

(More customer reviews)I enjoy backpacking or just being lazy at a campsite all weekend and this has got to be the best "compressible pillow" that I have ever laid my head on.This pillow is fairly lightweight (for being fairly inexpensive), and it is still able to provide adequate support all night long.

The pillow is attached to its carry bag and simply rolls up into the bag where it can be zipped up inside.Once more, if you wish you can compress the pillow even further with a compression sack or by simply squishing it where you want it (within reason).

I am a fairly big guy who likes to sleep in comfort.I like 3 pillows or more on my bed, but this one pillow provided me with just enough support that I found myself content for the very first time with just a sleeping bag, a sleeping mat, and one little pillow.

If you can't afford something extravagant, and you want simple camping (without lugging along your entire bed from home) or a fairly lightweight pillow that provides satisfactory support for when you go backpacking I would definitely recommend that you give this product a try.It worked for me.

Now, if I can just find the perfect camp sleeping mat...

We live in Maine and sometimes have thunderstorms with gusty winds come thru. All it takes is seconds to unclip and pick up the poles and give them a little twist and the tent drops to the ground till the storm goes thru. Just as quick to set up again. I lost 3 tents before to wind. I won't have to worry about that with this one.

Regardless of whether you extend this stand fully or peg the legs in place IT IS NOT SAFE. The liklihood that your stove will fall through this stand is extremely high. I spent a long time experimenting with it before being forced to return it and buy a table. On the package another suggested use is as a stand for suspending a rubbish bag. If that is all that it can be used for, it's not worth the cash. A redesign is needed.

(More customer reviews)There are definitely some advantages to hammock camping such as being off the ground and not sleeping on a hard surface. I have no trouble with sleeping in the Lawson Hammock, but I have discovered a few setbacks about hammock camping in general. If privacy is required to change clothes, changing inside the hammock is tough but doable. You don't really have an area to store your gear while camping and especially while sleeping that a tent provides. It is extremely difficult to cold weather camp using a hammock. The process of positioning yourself in the hammock in a closed sleeping bag is tough due to the slick surfaces of both the nylon hammock and the bag. The fact of being suspended in the air (cold air)on a compressed sleeping bag does not allow the camper to retain body heat as compared to sleeping on a closed cell pad. To best use the Lawson Hammock as a bivy, the camper needs to be smaller than 6' and really a lean individual as the suspended roominess disappears once the hammock is on the ground.

All that being said, I'm still glad I bought the hammock. I will gladly use it in spring/fall conditions where sleeping under a bag or blanket will suffice. I did have an aluminum pole to snap which was replaced with no squabble under warranty.

ABO Gear Instent Shelter Review

(More customer reviews)I purchased the Abo Gear Instent as a beach shelter for our infant daughter.Its first use at the beach in cool spring weather went well.The Instent was fast to set up and take down.Our baby enjoyed exploring the tent and soon fell asleep.Not much room though for adults to sit comfortably and the ceiling height prevents use of chairs.

Our second experience with the Instent was very different.At the beach on a sunny day in June, the Instent got very hot inside despite a normal ocean breeze and the windows open.Baby was sweating and crying so we took her out.During this time, one of the corner poles kept collapsing and I had to push it back into its socket.None of the other shelters on the beach seemed to be having problems.On take down, one of the plastic poles (maybe the same one) broke from its socket and tore into the fabric of the tent, rendering our Instent useless.

I contacted Abo Gear, and despite a quick response and a promise of, "We'll take care of the problem", I have not received a replacement or a status in sixty days.I contacted Abo Gear again and they responded with questions about the weather on the day it broke.It seems Abo Gear is looking for a way out of honoring their warranty.

On a recent Instent-less trip to the beach, a friend purchased a Lil' Nursery tent for us.It is smaller, cheaper and better ventilated than the Instent and worked fine on the beach in the July sun, though it does require a few minutes to set up.I wish I had bought this first and saved eighty bucks on the Instent.Since Abo Gear customer service never came through for me, I don't know whether I had a lemon Instent or whether there are major quality problems with this product.Based on my experience with Abo Gear and the tent's performance, I give them both the lowest rating.If by chance I receive a replacement, I will update this review.

(More customer reviews)If you are not a frequent camper (like me) this is a good tent for the price. It pretty much does the job and looks good, I like the mesh windows but I do have three complaints.

1. Unless you have your tent pitched on some canvas (as my friends did) it is going to get wet in the rain. I thought having a rain fly would solve any weather issues but it definitely doesn't. My tent and everything in it was soaked after a storm. Maybe that's just me not being the most educated camper but again I thought that maybe they should tell you that.

2. The instructions are the worst. They just are. The only advice I can give you is to mark your poles with a waterproof pen after you first set it up because each one has to go in a specific place, in a specific order and they don't really tell you so the first time you really have to struggle through it.

3. There is no way this is a 3-man tent, it just isn't. At most you could get a couple in the tent but even then you are going to be quite crowded if you have anything more than a backpack with you.

Final thoughts... it did the job and I didn't spend a fortune so even with the 3 complaints above I feel like I got what I needed out of it.

If you have a Eureka tent you know the "pole connector hub" is actually a METAL star that all the poles lock into. The screen house is a similar design, but the "pole connector hub" is cheap plastic! The first time I put this together I cracked the plastic star because everything was not perfectly aligned. It makes no sense that metal poles would be well supported by a plastic hub!It simply is not up to the level of quality I have expected from Eureka--even at this price I would stay away from this product.

For 1 or 2 people under 6 feet tall this is a good product for the money.

That gossamer mesh tent body means no condensation to contend with, and great views on clear nights.I was also very impressed with the weight... light enough to tempt an ultralight backpacker.We stayed dry throughout a 9 hour downpour, too!The down side (and its a big one, in my opinion) is that the tent body itself is very delicate (natch, being all mesh).Staking the tent down with the edges taut resulted in "runs" in the mesh netting in various areas.I didn't really stretch the tent incredibly taut, just snug, but it resulted in several little 1/2" runs scattered throught the tent canopy and upper sides.Stake the tent loosely (or not at all) and stake the fly taught and you should be fine, I think.However, if you're camping in windy conditions this could be a problem.

My favorite thing about this tent is that you wake up in the morning and you stare at a beautiful light blue color (the tent is white and the rain flap is blue), it was very relaxing. The rain flap is perfect if you easily get cold because it goes all the way to the floor and insulates the tent at night. There are two windows, which the rain flap can cover or has the option to leave open. The vestibule area is very spacious, we had two camping chairs in it during the peak heat of the day and two dogs, yet it was still perfectly comfortable. There are two zippered doors on the vestibule area, which makes it nice for air flow and shade if you get a campsite with few/no trees. You can still enjoy the nature around you and feel protected from the sun. We easily stored all of our camping gear in the vestibule area while we were exploring the area and it was well hidden from sight. Our two large dogs slept comfortably in the vestibule area and had no idea they were not "inside" the tent.

We did not test this tent in the rain yet, but the design seems like it was made with that in mind. There are lots of options for staking the rain flap so that it would allow for rain to fall away from the tent. There is even a flap on the front of the vestibule door, which seems like it would act to keep the vestibule door dry if it was rolled up.

The set up was a breeze, although it is a tall tent, so it is best if you have at least two people setting it up. Very sturdy tent poles. The zippers are great, there are even flaps to protect the zippers from letting rain in the tent. Sometimes these snagged a bit when getting in and out, but not too bad and just learned to be careful. The zipper flaps have velcro to keep them extra secure. I am very satisfied!

Nicely lightweight and easy to set up and breakdown, the sporty Wenzel Nova dome-style tent is a great choice for a weekend car camping outing. It features a single room that measures 6 by 5 feet, and a 38-inch maximum height. It has a half-circle door with a mesh window covering half of it (and an interior zippered closure) as well as a three-quarter vented dome with no-see-um mesh. The interior is quite spare, with only a small gear pocket in one corner near the door.
Set up was easy, for the most part, and we erected the tent (with its two shock-corded fiberglass poles) in under five minutes. The one impediment to an even faster assembly was the heavy-duty nylon corner pockets that secure the poles, which included a polyester-reinforced interior flap that's not seamed at the top of the entry. Thus, we had a tougher time than we should have trying to make correct purchase with the pocket, continually hitting the space between the nylon pocket and the interior poly pocket.
But we could forgive this slight design flaw for such a nicely light and easily backpacked tent. However, it should be noted that this tent isn't suited to an all-out assault by rain, with just a small rain cover (instead of a full fly) to protect the dome's three-quarter-ventilated square, which is quickly attached using integrated plastic hooks. That said, the water-resistant polyester exterior (polyester utilizing Wenzel's Weather Armor coating) will shed drizzle and light rain (tested under our extended sprinkler test in our backyard) and keep you warm and protected inside. It also features a heavy-duty nylon floor with taped seams.

Selecting a Tent
Fortunately, there are all kinds of tents for weekend car campers, Everest expeditions, and everything in-between. Here are a few things to keep in mind:
Expect the Worst
In general, it's wise to choose a tent that's designed to withstand the worst possible conditions you think you'll face. For instance, if you're a summer car camper in a region where weather is predictable, an inexpensive family or all purpose tent will likely do the trick--especially if a vehicle is nearby and you can make a mad dash for safety when bad weather swoops in! If you're a backpacker, alpine climber or bike explorer, or if you like to car camp in all seasons, you'll want to take something designed to handle more adversity.
Three- and Four-Season Tents
For summer, early fall and late spring outings, choose a three-season tent. At minimum, a quality three season tent will have lightweight aluminum poles, a reinforced floor, durable stitching, and a quality rain-fly. Some three-season tents offer more open-air netting and are more specifically designed for summer backpacking and other activities. Many premium tents will feature pre-sealed, taped seams and a silicone-impregnated rain-fly for enhanced waterproofness.
For winter camping or alpine travel, go with a four season model. Because they typically feature more durable fabric coatings, as well as more poles, four-season tents are designed to handle heavy snowfall and high winds without collapsing. Of course, four-season tents exact a weight penalty of about 10 to 20 percent in trade for their strength and durability. They also tend to be more expensive.
Domes and Tunnels
Tents are broadly categorized into two types, freestanding, which can stand up on their own, and those that must be staked down in order to stand upright. Freestanding tents often incorporate a dome-shaped design, and most four-season tents are constructed this way because a dome leaves no flat spots on the outer surface where snow can collect. Domes are also inherently stronger than any other design. Meanwhile, many three-season models employ a modified dome configuration called a tunnel. These are still freestanding, but they require fewer poles than a dome, use less fabric, and typically have a rectangular floor-plan that offers less storage space than a dome configuration. Many one and two-person tents are not freestanding, but they make up for it by being more lightweight. Because they use fewer poles, they can also be quicker to set up than a dome.
Size Matters
Ask yourself how many people you'd like to fit in your fabric hotel now and in the future. For soloists and minimalists, check out one-person tents. If you're a mega-minimalist, or if you have your eye on doing some big wall climbs, a waterproof-breathable bivy sack is the ticket. Some bivy sacks feature poles and stake points to give you a little more breathing room. Also, if you don't need bug protection and you want to save weight, check out open-air shelters.
Families who plan on car camping in good weather can choose from a wide range of jumbo-sized tents that will accommodate all your little ones with room to spare. A wide range of capacities is also available for three- and four-season backpacking and expedition tents. Remember, though, the bigger the tent you buy, the heavier it will be, although it's easy to break up the tent components among several people in your group. It's also helpful to compare the volume and floor-space measurements of models you're considering.

(More customer reviews)This is a HUGE tent.Very spacious inside with what is really one large room and one smaller room.It comes with a cloth room divider which is a bit hard to figure out how to attach in the large room to separate it into two smaller (but still roomy) rooms and when it is attached it doesn't do a good job of creating separate rooms.Much space is left under and around the divider so we don't even use it.But, that's not a negative towards this tent.

SetUp:
1.)Take your time and read the directions on the nylon sack and follow them carefully, step by step.The tent is not hard to set up and can be done by one person but is best if there are two people to set it up.
2.) Make sure the inside sewn-in door is unzipped so that when the tent is flat and ready to be raised a person can enter easily to the center of the tent to lift it while the other person secures the poles on the outside.
3.) Make sure that the rain fly is put on right-side up.If a big wind/rain comes then having it properly secured is essential.
4.)Don't take any short cuts and do everything the directions say to do.
5.)When taking the tent down take your time and fold it up carefully.I lay the tent out flat with the 3 rooms extended.Then I take each room and fold it in towards the center.Then I fold the tent again. You want it narrow enough so that when you roll it up it will fit easily back into the sack.It's easy to do but it takes a few times to get the hang of it.And the poles are very easy to extend and then fold up.I love how everything is so compact and goes back into the sack.The poles and tent sleeves are color-coded so it's very easy to know where each pole goes including their clamps.When we first got this tent we set it up in our back yard several times just for practice.It gets much easier the more often you set it up but if you can practice in advance of a camping trip that's good.And you would want to see if there is anything wrong with it prior to using it for real.

We went on a week-long camping trip last week and this tent was wonderful.The screen windows are great for air circulation and to be able to see outside.It has screens on all sides but you can zip them up at night for privacy.If you leave the rain fly off the roof of the tent is screen netting.We didn't do that but it would be great to lie there and watch the stars at night.I am 5'10" tall and could easily stand up and walk around inside the tent.It is so very spacious on the inside that four or more queen-sized air mattresses could easily be used with room to walk around.This tent really felt like home.

We did not get to test it in a rain storm.It did rain briefly but not long enough to see if the tent would leak.The directions say to use a "seam sealer" which we have not done yet, but will before our next camping trip.

**Note**

If you plan to use this tent in a campground be aware that most pre-made tent pads will not be large enough for this tent.We had to look for a tent pad that was very low to the ground so that the tent floor would be as flat as we could get it.Also, be sure to lay a tarp(s) underneath the tent floor.We had to use three 8'x10' tarps, one for each room.

So far, we love this tent and and the only problems we have had is the velcro closure on the front door sometimes catches the screen netting and has messed it up a bit, and one of the metal ring pins broke but Swiss Gear immediately sent several more for free upon request.The tent fabric is lightweight but seems very durable.

Black Diamond Vista 3-Person 3-Season Tent Review

(More customer reviews)Well, the Black Diamond Vista tent is all it's cracked up to be for my family. For nearly 15 years I've used a North Face Firefly, which was fantastic for me and my wife. For 3 or more, it was simply too small. It also lacked headroom, which made it slightly uncomfortable for long nights stuck inside when it was raining.

Enter the Vista: More tent than we'll ever need, but I appreciate the spacious interior, and so does my wife. We have one son, and the three of us have room enough to play games. If a little stork brings us another baby, we'll have the extra room for 4!

Set up is a breeze after just one practice run. Color coded corners make attaching the sturdy fly very simple. Without the fly, the tent is perfect for warmer summer evenings. A good breeze, and good visibility make sleeping in this tent very comfortable and romantic.

With they fly, the elements are kept at bay. We haven't had the chance to test it in a deluge, but from what I've seen so far, I'm not too worried. Condensation on the inside was non-existent. The fly is also made so that the top of the zipper can be left open to help air out the tent, even in incliment weather. Great design.

The matching Vist footprint is a perfect fit, and should be considered mandatory to protect your investment. It's also extremely small when packed.

The one complaint would be the stuff sack, which could be better built. Black Diamond is quick to make things right, but the stuff sack strings and where they're sewn in gave out prematurely. I'd recommend an after-market stuff sack if you hike great distances and will be putting in and taking out the tent a lot. I found that the Sea to Summit Orange Ultra Sil XXL Stuff Sack is a perfect replacement, and better built. A $8 stuff sack was not worth dropping the rating to 4 stars simply because everything else about the tent is excellent.

The tent is light, and easy to carry by myself on rigorous hikes. But, I don't mind carrying a 50 to 60 pound pack. I don't notice the difference between this and my ultra-light firefly on the trail.

The tent poles are well-made, and the 'spider' assembly seems to be a great design so far.

Highly recommended for those wanting a spacious 3 man tent. The only other competition would be the Losi 3P. I got the Vista at good price, and couldn't pass it up. Check out reviews on the Losi 3P and Vista before committing. Either way you go, I think you'll be getting a tent to last a lifetime.

Bugs were not a problem, but you need to air it out before taking it in the field.

1.)It's sorta light.Considering its size, it's sorta light, probably around 7 pounds when you include the footprint (not included.)Considering how voluminous this thing is, I really don't mind the extra ounces.

2.)It's freakin' huge.Seriously, this thing is the airplane hanger of small tents.The way the poles pull this thing apart, there is just tons of headroom in this then.Maybe it's a character defect of mine, but I get a little uneasy being in confined areas, like when you're trying to get a pair of pants on in a tent and you're banging your head against a wall/ceiling.I've never had a problem like that in this tent.Seriously, it's gigantic.I'll bet if you took a ratio of square footage to cubic footage, this one would win by a mile.

3.)It's mostly screen.No more riding out humid, still nights.With all-around screen, whatever little wind is around -will- pass through your tent.My last tent had a clever wind-flow system so that you had to position the tent just right with respect to the wind to catch any breeze.Never again!

4.)It's easy to use.It's a snap to put up and the rain fly is very easy to deal with.The doors are very intuitive and easy to get in and out of.It's really a no brainer.The only challenge is reading the directions the first few times to figure out when, where and how the poles go in.After that, it's smooth sailing.

5.)It's lasting quite well.I've had this for three years now and we camp regularly in it, even in the snow.So far, no stitches have popped, all the zippers are cherry and as far as I can tell, there isn't even any abrasion on it.My guess is that the rain fly has faded a bit, but I would have to compare it to a fresh one.Other than that, I'm quite surprised at how well this is holding up.

This is a really great tent.My -only- complaint is that the vestibules really cannot hold that much stuff.When this is billed as a "three person tent" I'd say there is no theoretical way to fit three campers and all of their stuff into this tent.For the two of us, however, this tent is just perfect.

Here's how to put them on your tent:

1) Place the ring piece inside the tent at the spot you want it.

2) place the oval-with-strap piece on the OUTSIDE of the tent and push the oval piece through the tent fabric into ring piece on the inside.The ring piece locks it in place.

It's hard to understand with words, you just have to fiddle with it until you get it.It is very clever.Enjoy.

(More customer reviews)I bought this Hilo Hut last fall, set it up in the garage for practice and the poles shredded overnight.I contacted Texsport to get some new poles from them and they never responded.

I also had a problem with the zipper, it was missing a tooth or two down low.I put on some duct tape to stop the zipper from going down all the way and getting jammed.

This thing deserves less than 1 star, unfortunately you cannot submit a review without a star rating.How about minus 1?

Bottom line, Amazon has a few other small privacy tents to choose from.You should try your luck with them.The price may look right on this one but be warned you'll get a low quality product, with no customer service from the manufacturer.

(More customer reviews)I got this tent when I was 17 years old. I am now 33. It has served me faithfully 17 years in 10 different states, including northern Maine. It's sturdy, and setting it up is easy as pie after the first one. I put a little TLC into this tent every year by putting some seam sealer on it but that's it. I am a big guy, (6 foot 1) and I treat this tent more like a really big two person tent. My two kids and I sleep in this tent with no problem! It fits a queen size airmattress no problem. Eureka is the king of customer service, and many accessories are available. While this tent may seem "plain jane" compared to other tents now available, it's ease to take care of and quick set up make this a great first tent for new comers or a perfect tent for those getting back into the sport of tent camping.

About Eureka
Though the exact year is unknown, Eureka's long history begins prior to 1895 in Binghamton, New York, where the company still resides today. Then known as the Eureka Tent & Awning Company, its first wares were canvas products--most notably, Conestoga wagon covers and horse blankets for nineteenth century American frontiersmen--as well as American flags, store awnings, and camping tents.
The company increased production of its custom canvas products locally throughout the 1930s and during the 1940 and even fabricated and erected the IBM "tent cities" just outside Binghamton. The seven acres of tents housed thousands of IBM salesmen during the company's annual stockholders meeting, which had since outgrown its previous locale. In the 1940s, with the advent of World War II and the increased demand for hospital ward tents, Eureka expanded operations and began shipping tents worldwide. Ultimately, upon the post-war return of the GIs and the resultant housing shortage, Eureka turned its attention to the home front during the 1950s by supplying awnings for the multitude of mobile homes that were purchased.

(More customer reviews)If you're willing to sit (or are tall enough you can't ever stand, even in the tallest dome tents, like me) this tent gives as much effective space as almost any 4-person tent out there.Plus, it's very well made, has a good profile for resisting wind and storms, comes from a quality manufacturer you can trust, and is easy to set up and take down.It is light enough to backpack with -- just barely, and if you are a bit of a "pack horse".

My wife and I use this with our 2-year-old daughter primarily for car camping.We have a *ton* of space.The footprint of this tent is larger than a queen size bed.If you're considering using this mostly for car camping, I recommend the LL Bean semi-rectangular synthetic bags (all semi-rectangular bags zip together since they have a symmetrical shape) and a cheap high density foam or memory-foam mattress topper instead of a traditional Therm-A-Rest style mattress.You will then effectively have a queen size bed *and* tent that you can fit in the trunk of your car with ease.

This tent at Amazon's current pricing beats even the sale prices you'll see around on the old Mutha Hubba (non-HP) model.If Amazon ends the big sale, that won't be so.The older model might actually be nicer if you don't anticipate severe conditions -- it relies more on the rainfly for weatherproofness and so it's a lot airier inside since it has a lot of mosquito mesh where this model has canvas.Still, even on a summer car camping trip there have been days when I was very glad to have the extra rain protection this 'HP' version offered.

Buy the optional footprint but don't try to stretch it tight -- it is slightly undersized and *will* tear if you do so.This tent floor is quite waterproof and does not need edge-to-edge protection from the footprint, which is mostly to keep it from grinding on the dirt and becoming no longer watertight.The footprint is cheap, already cut to the right size and shape, and *much* lighter than one homemade from a tarp.
